Return of the Hydra
Shairra was once a very powerful city, capital of a vast empire of merchants, mages and philosophers. Its trading ships roamed to every corner of the Three Seas, which they proudly called the Shairran seas. Its language was spoken throughout all of the Midlands, its ruling philosopher-mages respected. Now, most of the city’s power is gone, and only a trace of Shairran’s former wealth remains. Its inhabitants, the Shairrans, are still proud of their history and keep referring to other cultures as ‘barbarians’.
The city has its own time-reckoning. It begin with the foundation of the City by Averia Shairran, renegade member of the Ennearchs. In the fourth century, the city knew its golden age. The city was wealthier than ever, but, as the Shairrans say ‘Nothing lasts forever’… The slow decline in the fifth century was soon followed by a mayor conflict with the growing empire of Kern. In the two following Shairran Wars, the Shairran mages and mercenary armies proved no match for the legions of Kern. First, Shairra lost most of its oversee territories, and later most of the city was razed to the ground by General Trevor the Elder.
Nowadays, Shairran culture still lives on, adopted by their conquerors. The trade is slowly recovering, despite the ever increasing taxes of the empire. The city’s philosopher-mages, however, are another matter. Having nothing but a trace of their former status and power left, they have declined into a mindless rabble of buffoons and quacks, whom even the common people find hard to believe nowadays.
Shairra is now ruled by a proconsul, appointed by Kernian authorities. It’s a hard job, for the city has almost slipped into anarchy the last years and the last proconsuls have done nothing but filling their own pockets. Former proconsul Simonides was no exception to this rule, and the new proconsul, Diokles, does not promise well either.
