Return of the Hydra
The Silent Snakes probably are as old as Shairra itself. Long ago, they were the servants of the city’s rulers, the philosopher-mages, doing the wizards’ dirty work. Nowadays, they are far more powerful than Shairra’s so-called wizards, and if one organization can lay claim to ruling the city, it’s the Silent Snakes. It’s no secret they have strong ties with all of the Merchant Houses and control most of Shairra’s trade. A wise merchant pays his ‘protection fee’ to the local ‘Snake’, otherwise his business won’t last long. Blackmailing and smuggling aside, the Silent Snakes also work as assassins. For enough coin, they’re willing to assassinate even the proconsul himself and once paid, they will hunt down their target relentlessly. However, knowing the chaotic nature of their fellow Shairrans, they only make deals with people of at least reliable standing.
The Silent Snakes also have a neverending feud with the Grabling Guild, the second most powerful of the city’s Thieves’ Guilds. The Grablings dream of revolution, equality and complete anarchy, while the Silent Snakes want things to remain as they are: the rich richer and the poor poorer.
The Silent Snakes have a strict hierarchy, but because of the city’s general instability, no one remains in power for long. Therefore, the most powerful assassins work free-lance, and take direct orders from no one. Many of the Guild’s members take venomous creatures as their names, such as Charis, the Black Widow, or her brother, the infamous Green Viper.
